Cityfest Headliner: Glenn Morrison
Cityfest presents this year's headliner: Glenn Morrison! Multi-talented, multi-tasking, focused and ambitious, Glenn Morrison is the archetype of the modern DJ/producer star. The 26-year-old Toronto native is as happy rocking an underground house party as he is performing at an exclusive oceanic rooftop venue; as adept at composing an international club anthem like ‘Contact’ as he is at concocting a pop dance record that strikes to the Billboard Charts in America.

His name alone gets 1.7 million social networking and internet hits a month. His productions have featured on over 900 compilations in the last five years. He has enjoyed the support of DJs as varied as John Digweed and Richie Hawtin to David Guetta and Tiesto. For three years he was resident at the world's best club, Ibiza’s Amnesia Club, and is currently a resident at Space in Ibiza, as well as Space in Miami. His label Morrison Recordings has put out 118 releases and counting, his Sequence Radio podcast series gets 12,000 downloads a month and is broadcast on XM and Sirius Radio in North America, and most recently he signed to Sony Music ATV as a writer and producer. He’s produced and/or remixed for legendary bands & acts such as Queen, the Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Cher, Pharrell, Sean Kingston, and the B52s. And he is perfecting a sinuous, hooky sound that combines the eerie beauty of pure techno with light rains of melody and flashes of emotion.

In short, Glenn Morrison is one of the most dynamic and accomplished talents in electronic music today

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Toronto (BBBST) is really excited to be partnering with Cityfest this year, and we want to extend a BIG thanks to them for inviting us!

Be on the lookout for our booth, where we’ll have our friendly staff available to chat with you about anything and everything, whether you want to learn about volunteering, hosting a fundraising event, making a donation or just exploring all the ways you can get involved with us, in both “BIG” and “Little” ways—it all helps! Stop by our BBBST booth and say “hi” on Saturday, August 23!

BBBST is all about changing lives for the better —not only the lives of Toronto’s children and youth, but also the lives of our volunteer mentors. And we’ve been doing it for over 100 years!

Through developing and implementing a wide range of high-quality mentoring programs, we’ve grown over the years to meet the ever evolving needs of the city of Toronto. We match children and youth (Littles) with volunteer mentors (Bigs) through one-to-one matching, as well as group programs, based in schools and in the community.

We believe that by changing the course of young lives, we can in turn improve Toronto’s future. Mentoring has the power to change the trajectory of a child’s life, through instilling the importance of staying in school, having respect for family, peers and community, as well as giving back. Each time we pair a child with a mentor or introduce a group of students to an in-school program, we start something incredible—a life-changing relationship built on friendship, trust and empowerment.

For more information about how you can volunteer, attend a BBBST event or donate, visit our website at bbbst.com or call 416-925-8981.

BBBST’s vision is that every child who needs a mentor, has a mentor.

Cityfest Presents: No Big Deal

Maxwell Miller and Benny M formed No Big Deal in early 2011. The two are constantly engineering new sounds that push the boundaries of "genre".

Coming from different musical backgrounds, Maxwell and Benny both have unique visions for what the future of music will hold. Maxwell was born playing the piano. Classically trained to the highest level, he dabbled in hip hop and experimental production until he found his niche. Benny has been writing and singing since the age of 8. When the two met, their mutual love of electronic music heavily influenced their production style.

Cityfest Presents: Frank Walker

on Saturday, 09 August 2014. Posted in Artist Lineup

Cityfest Presents: Frank Walker
Frank Walker is a consummate performer. With a strong theoretical background of chordal progressions and a strong ear for what works on the dance floor, his eclectic mix of arena style house music juxtaposed with euphoric splashes of melody make him one of the most exciting new talents to grace the dance music industry today. Having had strong performances with Eric Prydz, Glenn Morrison, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Tommy Trash, and Quintino, coupled with touring to venues in Las Vegas, Dominican Republic and more, Frank is showcasing his talent on the worldwide stage.

Over the course of just under 2 years, Frank has also now learned how to write and produce his own material, which is eclectic, identifiable, and unique – the overlaying motif is that there is strong songwriting with a real sense of the club aesthetic. He has also begun a monthly project entitled Mashup Mondays, giving back to the EDM community strong bootlegs of popular tracks with a club twist.

In an age where the idea of a DJ has become completely saturated, true musical artistry and integrity will be the one true indicator of what will separate the men from the boys. In Franks case, he possesses all the required skills. He is a terrific writer and producer, is an excellent DJ that can work any room by feeling the room, and he has the ear to bring eclecticism and musical depth to clubbing landscape.

In short, Frank Walker is part of the new breed of musicians in 2014 that is a welcome compliment to the ever changing nature of dance music, and it is an exciting time for someone who is so focused and talented in his craft.

Cityfest presents: South of Bloor

on Tuesday, 12 August 2014. Posted in Artist Lineup

Coming off the release of their 2014 album The Street, South of Bloor will spend the year building on the momentum garnered from their short, yet acclaimed debut record. SOB formed in 2010 with still active, Dan Bouwhuis (Vocals, Guitar), Kevin Zemnickis (Drums) and Mike Burger (Bass). Since their fruition, the indie pop 3-piece has filled many of Toronto's most notable concert venues (The Horseshoe, Rancho Relaxo, el Mocambo) before even having a commercial release.

SOB is most recognized by their work with long time friends Antony East and Blake Van Der Jet of GreenShades Productions (Toronto). GreenShades helped the band become permanent fixtures in the Toronto indie scene and also helped produce videos for Where Are We Going, and 40 Lands.

In 2013, the band met young producer, Hiren Mistry (Big Wreck, Monster Truck) and began working on what would become South of Bloor's debut release. Polished production and contagious melody saturate the entirety of The Street, meanwhile preserving the authenticity of a live 3-piece rock band.

"...its not hard to predict SOB becoming popular with the masses." ~ K. Candelmo, Indie MUSEic - Feb 1, 2014

"'South of Bloor delivers the best new sound Ive heard so far this year,.." ~ Vegard, entertained.net  - Jan 25.2014

"It is the opinion of Two Way Monologues that this is a stellar representation of how far South of Bloor has come..." ~ Dan Wolovic, First Spin Monologues - Jan 6, 2014

We know you have a passion for great food in this city but don’t always have time to cook - or the desire to go out and get it. At Orderit.ca, we believe in offering real food from real restaurants because takeout and delivery shouldn’t mean sacrificing quality. We offer delivery from hundreds of unique local restaurants that don’t offer delivery themselves, in addition to your favourite takeout and delivery restaurants.

Just like you, our team of dedicated food lovers are always on the hunt for the next best dish to eat in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and growing across Canada. We seek out trendy restaurants, and we bring trendy restaurants to you. We believe that food delivery should go beyond the pizza box and sushi menus to include burgers, BBQ, burritos, souvlaki, seafood, pasta, poutine, Portuguese chicken, cold pressed juices, vegan salads and tons more. Our delivery areas extend up to several kilometers so this means you can try restaurants way beyond your neighbourhood block, all from the comfort of your living room.

We have over 190 restaurants servicing the CityPlace area alone. Some popular favourites include Toma Burger Addiction, Barque Smokehouse, The County General, Poutini’s, Hawker Bar, Chippy’s, Fourno, 7 West, Vagabondo, Little India, KFC Fresh, Live Organic Food Bar, Bangkok Garden, To-ne Sushi, Bolet’s Burrito, Penelope, Caplansky’s, Hero Burger, 259 Host, Jerk Joint, The One That Got Away, Melt Grilled Cheese, Magic Oven Pizza, Portuguese Chicken Guys, Total Cleanse and Insomnia Restaurant and Lounge.

ArtWalk: Jimmy Chiale
Born in Paris, France 1987, Jimmy was enchanted at a young age with the idea of living like Picasso; in his studio surrounded by paintings and people who would engage in conversation over his work.

He immersed into drawing at a very young age. Starting with simple Disney and comic book characters. He knew fell in love with drawing and felt reassured that this was what he was meant to do. When Jimmy moved to Toronto in 2006 he experimented with different techniques, mediums and surfaces. Since then he has been commissioned to paint indoor and outdoor murals, skateboards, longboards, shoes and clothes.

He has worked cooperatively with various artists and musicians over the past 8 years and has found his own sense of style. He is influenced by everyday life, strong feelings of love, anger, happiness and sadness. He feels compelled to paint daily and therefore starts one or two paintings every day. He is obsessed with abstract composition and texture. He says his paintings are windows of the mind and come from the subconscious soul. Many of his paintings have eyes, which he says are all connected somehow and a symbol of our society today.

JIMMY CHIALE'S vivid canvases are a mash up of emotional construction of symbols and representations. His works are an immediate reaction to his environment and daily life, an imprint of his identity at that moment in time. JimmyChiale.ca

ArtWalk: Marc My Canvas
Growing up I wasn’t headed in any particular direction and was clueless as to what I wanted to do with my life. As time went on I found my direction; but unfortunately that was down. Using my creative attributes I can only imagine I received from my father who was a talented artist from Italy I began to paint. I started using bright colours to brighten my mood and found a passion for the art. As with my life I have learned techniques and lessons as I go by making mistakes along the way. When I paint I feel as though I am free to express myself and my moods without being judged, and if I can help brighten somebody else’s day with my art then even better. My paintings may not be in perfect proportion but then again neither is life. I can see the beauty in all art and just want to share a piece of my new found happiness with the world.

ArtWalk: Constanza Oquendo

on Friday, 22 August 2014. Posted in ArtWalk

Constanza Oquendo was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1988. Her innate creativity and interest in fashion was noticeable at a very early age. After finishing high school, Constanza was enrolled at Monteavila University where she majored in Communications, a career that comprises journalism, advertising and audiovisual. During her third year of college, she returned to her first love and enrolled in a basic tailoring and pattern-making course.

While still studying, Constanza began oper- ating a small sewing workshop. Her talent and creativity were immediately apparent to all who visited the apartment/studio.

Upon completing her University studies and receiving her bachelor’s degree, Constanzadevoted all of her energy to building her own fully integrated fashion company.

Amazingly, at age twenty-five, she is now the founder, owner, and creative director of Constanza Oquendo. Since then, four collections have been released to the market in just over a year and a half, and her brand has become a fashion reference in Venezuela. Modestly and gratefully, she attributes her success to numerous favorable print articles and the opportunity for personal appearances in print, televi- sion and digital media.
